H.I.S. Radeon X800GT IceQ

Testing

Recently, there has been a bit of controversy of how video card testing is done by review sites. Both sides seem to have good points on this. Dean and I have been talking about whether or not to change the way we benchmark and test video cards. Until we come to a definite decision we'll continue to do things as we have in the past, running pre-recorded demos and reporting the average FPS that the card runs at and compare it to other cards that we have here in the labs. There will be two runs, one geared towards pure speed, with no AA or AF, and the second run will be with all the eye-candy turned on.

We'll also be throwing in some comments to how the card performs while we're actually playing certain games and what we think of the image quality during our play. This will be a bit harder for me, while I do like to play some of these games, I'm not what you would call a hardcore gamer. Let's take a look at our test system and which benchmarks we'll be running through.

Test System:

  • AOpen i945 motherboard

  • Intel Pentium 4 820 Dual Core CPU

  • Hitachi 80GB SATA HDD

  • Lite-On DVD/CDRW

  • Kingwin 420W PSU

  • 1GB Corsair PC2-5400 memory

  • HIS X800GT/Inno3D 6600GT

  • Windows XP/SP2

Benchmarks:

  • Far Cry

  • Half-Life 2

  • Doom III
