Cooler Master Manufacturer:
Cooler Master by Dean Barker (8/21/2002 Seeing products like the HSC-V62 heatsink / fan make me feel that I'm not the only person irritated by loud fans in the world. Let me explain; the HSC-V62 is a variable speed heatsink / fan that varies it speed automatically via a sensor on the base of the fan. There has only been a few products produced like this and each has won our appreciation and praise. The other products we have seen with this type of "true" active cooling have been the Thermaltake Volcano 7 and Volcano 9 as well as the Global Win CAK II 16. So now it looks like its Cooler Master's time up at bat. Let's see how they do. Before we go on, we want to thank Cooler Master's HK office for sending this cooler over for us to play with. The sink itself is of comprised of 35 skived thin fins with an aluminum shroud. The aluminum shroud covers two opposing sides of the sink to channel air along the length of the fins and then out the two open sides. This type of set up is popular as that it increases the air velocity over the fins. Think of a window wide open and a gentle breeze blowing in. Take the same window and close it except for six inches. Now the air has some force and speed behind it. Applying this principle to heatsinks is important in that air volume and air velocity are both equally important. Moving air quickly over thin copper fins is a very good way to guarantee some good performance. The HSC-V62 is constructed from a single block of copper with the exception of the shroud. The shroud is copper colored aluminum to blend in more with the overall look of the product. The base of this cooler was a hit with us with one exception.. Notice the nice sticker protecting the base from tarnish or scratches? Well, maybe it was just me but that paper was a son of a gun to get off. It took no more than 5 or 10 minutes but those were long minutes rubbing that paper until it came up. With the paper protector removed, we found a real treasure. Frequently, you will hear us or other sites note that no lapping is necessary but can make X heatsink look cleaner. Not with the HSC-V62. This is because the 4 mm thick base was already polished to a HIGH shine. Much higher than many of you would have the patience to do yourself. I'm talking like 95% of true mirror quality. Outstanding! I can honestly say I have never seen so smooth and mirror finished a base as I have on the HSC-V62
