Introduction

The rule of thumb as far as high performance CPU cooling has been; if you want it to perform better, strap on a bigger fan.  OCZ has taken this principle to its practical summit and coupled it with the proven copper  thin fin technology.  Heatsink design is a matter of balance or choice.  More goes into this than finding the best formula for extreme cooling.  Weight, size, and noise must also be considered.  Unless you choose to try and make the baddest cooling product on the block.  At which point all bets are off and performance rules supreme.  The OCZ Goliath attempts exactly that.  Can it perform such that it may be included in the ranks of the Alpha PAL8045 and the Swiftech MCX-462?  We hope to find that out.  Thanks go out to The Overclockerz Store for sending over the review sample for us to use and abuse!

"Nuts and Bolts"

As we have already said, the OCZ Goliath is a thin fin copper heatsink.  The sides are aluminum that have been anodized blue.  Not including the sides, there are a total of 36 copper fins.  They appear to be welded to the base.  There do not appear to be any gaps or imperfections readily apparent in the fin’s attachment.  The mating of fins to the base can make or break a cooling products performance and reputation as we have seen with the original Kanie Hedgehogs.

The base of the Goliath is absolutely gorgeous.  Definitely a shaver here.  (The base is so polished you could shave by your reflection in it.)  No imperfections in the high shine of the base were obvious.   Save your sandpaper, you won’t need it here.  The base is not of uniform thickness.  Within the 75 x 60mm sized base there is an area that is 4mm thicker than the rest.  This area, where the CPU mates, is 45 x 57mm.  By cutting back on the total mass of the base, OCZ is able to keep the sink from weighting too much while still giving the performance we demand.

The clip is rather non standard.  It attaches to all six catches at the base of the socket.  If at some time in your computer life, you break the center catch on your mainboard, you were severely limited in what cooling products you can use.  Not an issue with the Goliath since it mounts to them all!

The Goliath keeps pressure on the base by two arms passing through the sink.  This will insure that equal pressure is applied, once mounted, for a flush fit every time.  The top of one side of the clip has a large area that gives the impression that it is a tooless clip.  This is not the case.  Because of the clip’s width, it is not pliable enough to bend without the aid of a screwdriver.  Utilizing the clip during installation was no easier or difficult than most.  However, once the sink was mounted it gave us a very secure feeling that it was on, and on tight.
