Introduction:

Not since Thermaltake swooped in with the Golden Orb sometime back has a high end heatsink come onto the market that is getting everyone into a frenzy with this lesser expensive highly effective cooling solution.  The days of shelling out $50 for an Alpha were and are drawing to an end.  Don't get me wrong, the big boys have definitely been putting out quality products that rock but nothing that really breaks the heatsink mold (pun intended.)

The Thermoengine just came in out of the blue with a unique design that again challenges the main stream in the same manner as the GORB.  Our review sample was generously sent to us from ThermoSonic Technology Inc. based out of Taiwan.  Let's take a look at what we got.  Check out the pics below.

Let's take this baby apart and see what's what.

Aside from a kick ass appearance, I noticed that the clip mechanism is a bit different than the other kids on the block.

Here is another one of those times when a great idea was right in front of our faces the entire time.  It just took ThermoSonic to come along and bring it into being.  How many times have you agonized with a flashlight and a small dental mirror to be absolutely CERTAIN the heatsink you just installed is flush against the chip.  Sometimes even after that sink is fastened into place it needs to be "squirmed" around just a hair to get it perfectly flush because of the clip being just larger than the sink it slides back and force just enough to get you off tract especially when you have some pull from the clip on the sink.  Too much pull on one side and BLAMMO you aren't flush.  Think I'm wrong?  Then why is the shim business so hot?  It's not just to keep from cracking those brittle cores.  ThermoSonic has designed their clip so that it pulls downward equally on both sides of the sink.  By raising the contact point it ensures that the force is more evenly distributed.  In the ball park as the principle of the Pyramids of Egypt.  This is a HUGE PLUS in my book.

The large cone or core of the sink itself is hollow.  Who knows what's inside, water, air, parts of Jimmy Hoffa?  I am sure there is a solid engineering reason for this that an engineer could tell you but... I'm not an engineer.  Sorry.
