by Dean Barker  (8/10/2002)

Introduction

Ever since the Tt Crystal ORB came out, it seems like what activity there was in the VGA and chipset heatsink market dried up.  Vantec saw this and has stepped up to the plate with their IceBerq chipset coolers.  There are two models, the CCB-A1A that is made of aluminum and the CCB-A1C that is solid copper.  Aside from some trendy colors that we will be looking at in a minute, both these coolers are low profile to keep from blocking the use of a PCI slot.  We want to convey our thanks to the guys at Sidewider Computers for sending these products over for us to play with.

What's inside the box.

The IceBerq comes with the CCB chipset sink (copper or aluminum depending on which one you have), two smaller more traditional looking passive heatsinks, a three to four pin Molex adapter, Thermal tape, push pins, and a spooge of silicon thermal paste.  As you can see in the pic below, what was especially cool about the passive sinks was that they were colored to match the red tinted aluminum or the high shine copper of the active chipset coolers.  The copper colored passive sink is NOT made of copper but rather aluminum.

Both coolers are identical in their design with the exception that the copper Vantec has a longer power line.  Speaking of the power lines, we were disappointed to see that there was no tach cable.  Vantec claims the fans spin at 5k RPMs but without a tach line, we are going to take their word for it.

The base of the copper unit was most certainly a shaver.  Check out the lapped look below.
