Corsair 1GB PC2 5400 Pro DDR2

Results

To put this mildly, both Dean and I were very impressed with our results. We loosened the timings on the memory to 5-4-4-15 to squeeze all we could out of it and started cranking. With a bit of a boost to the memory voltage and CPU voltage we achieved a 100 percent stable overclock of 258MHz on the FSB pushing our CPU from 2.8GHz to a whopping 3.61GHz. Just check out these readings...

As you can tell, the memory is running at 689MHz (344.6 x2) which above it's rated speed of 675MHz. Let's see what Sandra tells us.

As you can see, with the memory running at this speed, the benchmark results pretty much blow all the comparison results away.

Even though our overclock was well over the rating of this memory, I personally believe the true ceiling for the memory is much higher. Neither our CPU or the memory failed. Anything above 258MHz on the FSB would POST, but the HDD would not be recognized.

Conclusion

Corsair has long been known for their top notch memory, whether you're overclocking or just running at stock speeds. Once again, they have risen to the challenge by producing a set of first rate modules for a new technology.

For those of you upgrading to a DDR2 platform, this Corsair PC2 5400 is going to be the memory to have. It has plenty of headroom to push your CPU as far as you want and still have room left over. Granted, it is a bit on the pricey side, but if you've got the dough, it's more than worth it. As Intel's new chipsets continue to be improved upon and mature, I'm sure we'll be seeing much better overclocking capabilities from them and I have no doubt this memory is going to be the overclockers choice.

Pros:

  • Platinum heatspeaders w/Activity LEDs

  • Great performance

  • Overclocks very well

Cons:

  • $400 is nothing to sneeze at

  • More headroom than most systems can handle (Is this really such a bad thing though?)
