Introduction

The trend now in differentiating one product from another is to add to the length of its name.  At least in the case of OCZ, the names are often ones you can remember as opposed to long and seemingly random strings of identifiers we've all seen elsewhere.  OCZ has several DDR2 800 (PC2-6400) products on the market providing a spectrum of performance and value.  Not too long ago, OCZ released their OCZ PC2-6400 Special Ops Memory kit.  This kit improved on the standard DDR2 800 memory by offering the end user a tighter set of memory timings for improved performance.  The Special Ops Urban Elite kit offers the even tighter timings of 4-4-3-15 for a yet even higher level of performance aimed squarely at the uncompromising gamer and enthusiast audience.  Today, we have a closer look at OCZ’s tightly timed DDR2 800 memory, the PC2-6400 Special Ops Urban Elite (who can't remember that name?).  Before we get started, thanks go to where thanks are due.  A big and hearty thanks to Jess and OCZ Technology for sponsoring this review.

I’m as much a sucker for aesthetics as the next person.  What makes the good looks of the OCZ SOE Urban Elite is that they are on top of proven features with pure performance at heart.  This dual channel kit comes equipped with OCZ’s XTC heatspreader.  The XTC spreaders are OCZ’s screen mesh contact plate that aims at a balance between a heightened air exchange while keeping the contact area between the ICs and heatspreader as large as possible.  The pleasing aesthetic quality about these is their coloring.  The alternating black and gray urban BDU pattern gives the DIMMs an oddly familiar but different look.  Hence my remarking on looks with pure performance at heart.  Anyone wanting a stand out look for their next LAN, this is it.  Each DIMM is labeled on one side with a small sticker identifying the memory as PC2-6400 with its factory timings underneath.

  

Here is a close up of the 'Z' logo in the center of the memory stick.  This pic also gives you a nice close up of the urban camouflage pattern on the outer heatspreaders layered on top of the silver colored mesh contact plate.
