OCZ PC2-6400 Titanium EPP-Ready Memory Kit (2GB) by Dean Barker (12/17/2006)
Introduction Here in the days where everything is either Crossfire or SLI ready, we find ourselves benefiting from manufacturers optimizing their products to take advantage of a particular chipset or platform. This isn't just limited to video cards as we've seen with an outpouring of SLI ready power supplies of late. Take OCZ, who are pushing tailor made performance to a broader level. Their new EPP-Ready (Enhanced Performance Profiles) memory modules are specifically optimized for NVidia's 590 SLI chipset. The DIMM actually has two programmed speeds, one when run on an optimized board (NVidia 590 SLI) and another for other boards based on competing chipsets. For NVidia based 590 SLI boards, the OCZ's PC2-6400 Titanium EPP Ready modules run at a 4-4-4-15 (CAS-TRCD-TRP-TRAS) timing set and more importantly, at a 1T command rate. The 1T command rate should give the EPP modules a boost over standard memory's 2T command rate. When the units are installed in alternatively based boards with a chipset not in their optimized profiles, they default to 5-4-4-15 at a 2T command rate which is still respectable. Basically, we now have Plug and Play memory. A full and hearty thanks to Jess and OCZ Technology for sponsoring this review today and allowing us to get a look these units first hand and see what they do out of the box and what kind of abuse can we inflict beyond that!
