OCZ EL PC4000 Gold Edition Memory Kit (2GB) by Dean Barker (11/20/2005)
Introduction A good number of memory reviews start out with a “I remember when…” story of the days when a machine with 64 megs of RAM was state of the art. I still remember upgrading a PC years ago with a two meg memory stick. In the past few months, the separation between a high end gaming computer's memory needs and the rest of the field has increased dramatically. Until late this spring, a gaming computer with a gig of dual channel RAM was looked at as a very noble system. Since then, several of the newly released game titles have shown a voracious appetite for memory. The most notable of these being Battlefield 2. Almost overnight, the prevailing standard of one gig of memory doubled for anyone looking for shutter free game play with these newer and very memory hungry games. To this end, several memory makers have jumped on the bandwagon and released two gig memory kits. These are not to be confused with novelty memory kits whose sole aim is to give a select few the bragging rights of having the largest DIMM made. These are high performance sticks aimed at the most discriminating of users, gamers. OCZ Technology has been producing memory for a good while now and has proven themselves and their product. They back up their talk with a lifetime warranty valid even if the memory is overclocked. Today, we have their response to the two gig need, the OCZ EL-DDR PC4000 Gold Edition kit. Sporting large gold plated copper heat spreaders, the OCZ PC-4000 Gold sticks have an all business look. Let’s jump right in and have a closer look at these DIMMs and their performance.
