OCZ Reaper PC2-6400 HPC Memory Kit (2GB) We saw some small differences in performance with the ultra high end Titanium kit taking the lead in each bench. Changing things up a bit, let's see how far we can push these units at their stock non-EPP timings of 4-4-4-15 while at 2 volts. Remember, the OCZ warranty is valid for up to a 10% voltage increase if you so choose. For today's purposes, we're going to stick with stock timings and voltages. Pushing things inch by inch, we were quite happy to find a ceiling of 934MHz DDR for these units (467MHz x 2). Now that we have found our max speed at this timing set, let's revisit our benchmarks.
The differences between OCZ's ultra high end Titanium kit and the Reaper units was negligible. When the juice gets turned on, the Reaper DIMMs stood up with pride. 934MHz DDR equates to a 14% increase which is more than admirable. Performance wise, the extra megahertz showed value in more than bragging rights. Keep in mind, we hit the 934MHz without upping the voltage from its 2 volt default. The OCZ Titanium memory unit's default voltage is 2.2 volts. Conclusion OCZ's new Reaper memory kit certainly put a smile on our faces. Its performance was a bit shy of the Titanium edition memory but when the hammer fell, the Reapers didn't give up. 934MHz DDR is a phenomenal feat at a 4-4-4-15 timing set, let alone at the default voltage of 2 volts. We can't help but give credit to the OCZ Reaper heat pipe conduit technology. Heatpipes on memory modules, you gotta love it! What's more is this performance is on the shelf now in a two gigabyte kit for a hundred clams. Our only reservations with the kit was its height. The Reaper's off module fin added a whopping 35mm of height to each unit. The Tt MaxOrb cooler we used in testing has a small rheostat that hangs over the DIMM area. We had to remove the cooler to get the DIMMs installed. After installing everything, the top of the OCZ Reaper was barely touching the MaxOrb's rheo. If you have a cooler that overlaps the DIMM slot area of your mainboard, it is well worth your time to measure clearances and add in 35mm to be sure you have room.
When the dust settles, OCZ has released an excellent product at
an even better price point. With the exception of the added height, the
OCZ Reaper Memory Kit is something well worth considering for folks needing an
upgrade but not quite ready for a full on DDR3 jump which would mean a new
motherboard. Thanks again to
