Ultra Products PC3200 XL 1gb Memory Kit

Hammer down

Now its time to let it all hang out.  As we discovered with our Mushkin memory, by loosening the timings out to 3-4-4-8 we got the same ceiling in overclocking as we did with 2.5-4-4-8.  What we found was an amazing 275MHz max which is DDR550.  This is some pretty fast stuff.

Graphed below is the Ultra at its stock speed, max low latency speed and its maximum overclock.

Conclusion

Ultra may be the new kid on the block in the memory world but you wouldn't guess that if you weren't told.  They have put out a capital product with their low latency PC3200 memory sticks.  The tight 2-2-2-5 at DDR400 was expected but reaching DDR550 by loosening the timings was not.  There are a number of PC4000 or PC4200 memory products out that can't handle PC4400 (DDR550) but Ultra is most certainly not one of them.  Sporting sharp looks and a lifetime warranty, Ultra has a winner on their hands.  The only down side of things is that I was completely unable to find these products for sale... anywhere.  Hopefully the coming weeks will bring favorable pricing and product availability to us.  The Ultra memory products are definitely a short list item on your upgrade list.

UPDATE 3/9/2005 - A reader sent in an e-mail of finding the Ultra for sale at Tiger Direct for $250.

Pros

  • Ultra tight timing at DDR400

  • Gold anodized heat spreaders

  • Loosening up the timings gives you DDR550

  • Lifetime warranty

Cons

  • You can get a nose bleed at DDR550

  • Price and availability questionable
