AOpen AK89 Max / AK86-L (AMD 64) Mainboard

Results

We are going to begin with Sandra and the other office benchmarks.  Sandra 2004 Pro's Memory Bandwidth Benchmark shows the nForce3 based AK89 Max and the VIA K8T800 based AK86-L effectively in a dead heat with a statistically insignificant lead by the AK86-L

PC Magazine/Veritest's Business Winstone 2004 test a system by running multiple popular office programs to gauge real world productivity performance.  The programs used to test this within the Business Winstone 2004 program are Microsoft Access 2002, Microsoft Excel 2002, Microsoft FrontPage 2002, Microsoft Outlook 2002, Microsoft PowerPoint 2002, Microsoft Project 2002, Microsoft Word 2002, Norton AntiVirus Professional Edition 2003 and WinZip 8.1.  In looking at the results, it looks like it's trade up time.  The AK89 Max is showing roughly a 5.5% advantage.

Our other PC Magazine/Veritest bench is their Content Creation 2004.  Content Creation works from the same perspective as the Business Winstone except it focuses more on multimedia type productivity applications.  The apps that are run within Content Creation 2004 to generate a score are Adobe® Photoshop® 7.0.1, Adobe® Premiere® 6.50, Macromedia® Director MX 9.0, Macromedia® Dreamweaver MX 6.1, Microsoft® Windows Media™ Encoder 9 Version 9.00.00.2980, NewTek's LightWave® 3D 7.5b and Steinberg™ WaveLab™ 4.0f.  As with Business Winstone, the AK89 Max pulls ahead again.  The margin is less than before (2.5%) but present all the same.

Shifting away from being productive let's get realistic.  Are you looking for a new mainboard to run Excel or run UT2003?  With that in mind, let's move on to our gaming benchmarks.  The first of these is Code Creatures which can bring many a system to its knees.  Running the program at 1024x768 resolution the VIA based  board inched out the nForce.
