Thermaltake Gamma Pad

Centered at the top of the Gamma Pad is the Thermaltake logo and a small button that is flush with the mouse surface.  This button controls the lighting.  Seven colors are possible, these are green, red, blue, gold, purple, aqua and pink.  Depressing the button cycles through each color with an off setting between each.  In addition to having the choice of a constantly lit single color you are given an eighth option of having the pad cycle through all the colors.

The base of the Gamma Pad has four small rubber feet on each corner with a center piece that is 120mm in diameter.  The Gamma Pad showed no issues with slipping and always gave us a good solid grip.  The LEDs that provide the lighting are housed under the center piece.  These shine out to each of the four corners of the pad.  The Gamma Pad gets its power via a USB plug.  The USB cable measures 6'1" so you have plenty of reach.

Below are some shots of the Gamma Pad lit in each of its seven colors.

If you are interested in what the Gamma Pad looks like with the colors cycling automatically, here is a Quicktime movie of it in action.

Conclusion

The Thermaltake Gamma Pad certainly was a surprise.  Originally, I thought it was a novelty item that lit up.  Within a few minutes of playing with it, I discovered how smooth my mouse movements were.  My opinion has always been you upgrade based on function.  The Gamma Pad functions very well meeting if not surpassing the Ratpad GS in feel.  I believe this is from the tighter texture of the surface itself.  The lighting is a nice plus for a LAN rig or just something different.  In spite of the Gamma Pad's size being diminished from its competition, I never found myself repositioning my mouse to keep from running out of pad.  Thermaltake has done an excellent job with the Gamma Pad.

Pros

  • Smoothest gliding action I've ever felt.

  • No slip base.

  • Can be lit up in seven different colors or automatically cycle through them.

  • Long power cord.

Cons

  • Price and availability questionable at present.
