Kingwin 1000w Mach 1 Power Supply The Unit The 1000 watt Mach 1 measures out 20mm longer than the 800 watt model we reviewed here last year. The extra wattage requires a more robust array of heatsinks and cooling apparatus. The fan you see below is a blue LED number that is 140mm across. This should provide a sizeable amount of air flow over the gold colored internal heatsinks seen under the fan's finger guard. The fan's speed is controlled by a thermal sensor inside the power supply increasing fan speed and cooling power as the internal heat rises. This allows the unit to have extra cooling power in case of need while keeping the unit running as quietly as possible at all other times. The back of the Mach 1 is in effect an oversized stamped nickel plated steel vent. No airflow restrictions here. The power port and on/off rocker switch are on the right side with an Active PFC label next to them. Active PFC is a way to make a power supply more efficient in its power delivery. Hence the 80 Plus Certification we saw in the specs. What is does is automatically adjusts for variances in the AC input voltage to keep the unit's power delivery clean and stable. AC as in the AC power stands for Alternating Current. AC Power oscillates continuously, so to ensure a unit operates at peak efficiency, Active PFC adjusts this input voltage so output is constant. Kingwin's Mach 1 unit is modular as you already figured out. Kingwin does their modular cables though with class. Each connection end has a screw type outer lock instead of the plastic catch tabs normally found. Eight power out ports are present and are covered by rubber caps to keep unused ports clean and sealed off. The native cables on the 1000 watt Kingwin Mach 1 are the main ATX power cable which is a 20+4 setup as well as a 4-pin AUX and 8-Pin AUX power cable. The 20+4 type cables are nice if someone is upgrading a power supply with an older 20-pin motherboard. But those boards are rapidly going the way of floppy drives. Check out the cable braiding and black shrink wrapped ends. Kingwin has done an exceptional job here that is not only aesthetically pleasing but should be robust enough to weather years of any possible chaffing. Another look at the accessory cables. Two 6-pin PCI-E cables are included along with two PCI-E 6+2 cables. This means you can use the extra two as standard PCI-E or use them with the extra two pin line just like the 20+4 ATX power cable making it an 8-pin PCI-E plug. Quad SLI ready! In the second picture below be sure to notice the EZ-Grip connectors on the Molex plugs. The individual power cables plug into the main unit and are then secured by screw type locks as you can see below. Aside from being very sturdy, this gives the Kingwin Mach 1 a look not found elsewhere.
