Introduction

Power requirements for modern high end video cards have skyrocketed in the past year.  NVidia's GeForce 8800 series started this trend with the Radeon HD 2900 XT taking it trend a step further.  For an end user to run a system in SLI or CrossFire, this power consumption issue gets taken to a whole new level.  For my part, I won't recommend purchasing a power supply under 700 watts anyone.  The rub with 1000 watt + power supplies lies in these high wattage units come with a premium price tag.  Many manufactures have went the route of producing units under the kilowatt mark in an effort to keep the price from exceeding $300.

Kingwin is one such manufacturer with their 800 watt entry into the high power, high quality power supply wars.  Offering a large 140mm cooling fan, modular cables, NVidia SLI Certification and more, Kingwin brings a nice blend of features and function to the table.  Today, the folks at Kingwin have sent over a retail sample of their 800 watt Mach 1 power supply.  Let's jump right in with the specs of this unit up for review today.

What you get

Kingwin's 800 watt Mach 1  is about tidiness right out of the box.  I'm a huge fan of modular cables because of the neatness they allow.  Kingwin takes this philosophy so far as to its packaging.  Check out the included six modular cables that come packaged in a sectional plastic case.  Aside from the cables, you get a power cable, instruction manual and the power supply itself.

The Unit

The 800 watt Mach 1 close up view is dominated by a low speed 140mm blue LED cooling fan.  The fan represents almost the entire underside of the Mach 1.  The fan has an onboard sensor that detects temperature and adjusts the fan speed accordingly from 10% speed at 0 degrees Celsius up through 100% speed at 70 degrees Celsius.  Air is exhausted through the stamped grilling on the rear mounting area.  The grilling area is quite open, offering minimal restriction outside of the solid backing behind the on/off rocker and the 115/230 switch.
