Introduction

USB thumb drives are by their very nature small, but compared to 10 years ago their storage capacity is huge. But what happens when someone decides that small isn't 'small enough'? Yesterday, we showed you OCZ's Rally 2 thumb drive with it's blazing fast speed and excellent price. Today we're going to go in a different direction as they have also sent over the smallest thumb drive available, the OCZ Mini-Kart. And when I say small, I'm talking SMALL. Just taking a look at the packaging will give you an idea of how small it is.

Specs:

  • Dimensions: 43 x 19 x 2.8mm

  • Weight: (I tried to weigh the thing, but I didn't have a small enough scale to get a reading.)

  • Lanyard key ring

  • Blue status light

  • Storage size:  512MB, 1GB, and 2GB

  • 3 Year Warranty

In addition to the key chain lanyard, the Mini-Kart also comes with a small clear plastic case to put it in. Considering the size of the thing, I'd advise that you put it to good use. If you're wondering where the USB cap is, the Mini-Kart doesn't come with one in an effort to keep the size down. Keeping the drive in the case will also help to prevent you from accidentally breaking the USB interface.

While it might not seem all that small when viewed by itself in the pictures, take a look at it next to the OCZ Rally two that we just reviewed.

And for a better reference, you can see that while it might be only a bit longer than a penny, it's not any thicker.

So, is smaller any better? Let's put the thing in our test rig and find out what kind of performance we get.
