OCZ Mini-Kart Thumb Drive

Performance

As with the Rally 2, we'll be using Sandra 2007's File System Benchmark to test transfer speeds of the drive. We'll also be comparing the drive to the Rally 2 and our Corsair Voyager thumb drive.

The Mini-Kart is chugging along right at 9MB/s. So let's take a look at how it stacks up against the OCZ Rally 2 and the Corsair Voyager.

With the Rally 2 taking the lead and the Voyager coming in a comfortable 2nd place, I'd still have to say that 9MB/s of transfer speed is nothing to scoff at. Unfortunately our testing isn't quite what we like to consider on even ground here. The Mini-Kart is a 1GB drive and the Rally 2 is 512MB with the Voyager coming at 128MB. We would have liked to have had all three drives the same size.

Conclusion

One thing is certain. OCZ has produced an extremely small and low profile USB drive. With a thickness of that of a penny's width and a length about half that of a standard thumb drive it's safe to say the Mini-Kart does indeed fit the definition of portable. However, it's small size can also be a bad thing. The Mini-Kart is very hard to keep track of simply because of it's small size. While using this drive in day-to-day work situations, there were several times when I thought I had lost it. If you don't remember to take it out of your pocket, it could very well take a swim the next time you do the laundry. I would definitely suggest using the key chain lanyard or the case that comes with the Mini-Kart.

Perhaps the best thing about the Mini-Kart is it's price tag. Our 1GB model is going for $25.99 on New Egg with the 2GB model at only $45. Let's give a great big thanks to OCZ for both supplying us with our review sample and for making a quality product at a very affordable price.

Pros:

  • Price

  • Very small

  • Good performance

  • Three year warranty

Cons:

  • Small size = Easily misplaced
