OCZ ProXStream 1000w PSU review

The ultra high luster of the gun metal grey of its steel casing isn't apparent until you get close; then wow!  On the rear, resides a lone 80mm cooling fan.  This is surprising in a world with multiple cooling fans of 120 or even 140mm at times on other units.  Not here; one lonely 80mm.  We'll have to see how it handles the load at keeping things cool inside later.  Something else not readily apparent is that there is no manual on/off rocker switch by the plug.  This isn't a huge deal but how many of you have locked up a system from overclocking and reached around to flip that rocker switch?

The rear of the unit shows the stamped vent areas allowing an unrestricted air pull from within whatever type of case it is mounted in.  If you are looking for a surprise fan or venting in the top or bottom, you can stop.  It isn't here.  This may or may not be to allow the ProXStream such a small stature as vent holes don't take up space like fans do.

This brings us to the lines.  OCZ has braided all the power cables with a tight orange and black mesh with color coded shrink wrap.  The four independent 12v PCI-E rails are wrapped in orange with the rest of the lines being black on black.

The main ATX power connector is one of OCZ's 20+4 jobs that allows for easy installation in a system with either a 20 or 24-pin ATX power connector on the mainboard.  Aside from the transformable ATX connector, OCZ includes both a four and an eight pin auxiliary power plug allowing the ProXStream to fit most any board on the market.

With the power cables being the point of conversation right now let's list out how many of each and how long each is.

  • (1) 20+4 pin ATX - 19"

  • (1) 8 pin AUX - 20"

  • (1) 4 pin AUX - 20"

  • (2) SATA rails with three SATA connections each - 32" each

  • (2) Molex Three standard Molex + one FDD connector - 37" each

  • (4) PCI-E 6 pin rails - 21" each

The four independent 12v PCI-E rails cannot be under appreciated.  The majority of users even shopping for 1000w PSUs are power users and gamer's with deep pockets.  A pair of dual GPU VGA cards in SLI mode comes to mind right off as something the ProXStream is designed for.  Not many power supplies have this scenario covered; OCZ does.
