OCZ Rally 2 Thumb Drive

Performance

Using Sandra 2007's File System Benchmark we'll test the transfer speeds of the drive. As a comparison, we'll be using my Corsair Voyager and an old generic thumb drive to give a sense of where the Rally 2 fits in. Here's a quick shot of the drive's LED light. It is very bright and there is no way you'll miss that this thing is plugged in and active.

Our screen shot of Sandra shows the drive operating at 19MB/s of transfer speed with an access time of 28ms.

While this is a bit below the advertised specs of the drive, it is still far and away, much higher than any of the other drives listed in Sandra as a comparison.

Unfortunately for our comparison against other drives, we can't do a direct unit to unit comparison on equal footing. Our Rally 2 drive is 512MB in size and we do not have another thumb drive here of the same size. Our Corsair Voyager is 128MB as is my old generic drive. But let's take a look anyway.

While it's not exactly an equal test, the OCZ Rally 2 still pretty much blew away my older drive in terms of speed.

Conclusion

Is the OCZ Rally 2 thumb drive fast? Is it inexpensive? The answer to both questions is a resounding 'Yes'. It's more than 50% faster than the Corsair Voyager that I've been using for quite some time now. And while my Voyager unit is a bit dated, 19MB/s for a transfer speed is pretty smoking. But the best part about OCZ's Rally 2 has to be it's price. While our unit is only 512MB, with a price tag of only $20 smackers that's a pretty small penny per MB. And if you need something larger, well New Egg has the 2GB version for less than $50. You can't go wrong with that price point. Couple that with OCZ's lifetime warranty and I don't think you can find a better deal.

Pros:

  • Price

  • Performance

  • Lifetime Warranty

  • Did I mention it's only $20?

Cons:

  • None
