OCZ Rally2 Turbo 4GB Flash Drive

To give you an idea of size, here is the Rally2 Turbo next to a my watch.  A bit smaller than the previous OCZ ATV unit we looked at back in September.

Before you ask, let me answer you.  Yes, OCZ gets it.  The small hole allowing the neck strap to loop through it is on the flash drive itself, not the cap.  Thank goodness for that.  For years, it has driven me nuts to see companies make flash drive with neck straps that attach to the cap.  Not here though.

Under power and in use you can see the orange LED of the indicator light.  The light stays lit when the drive is connected and flashes as the dual channel memory of the Rally2 Turbo is accessed.

Performance

To have a look at the drive's performance we are going to use the HD Tach program.  HD Tach will give us average read and burst speed in MB/sec as well as random access speed times.  Since most flash drives are used in business type machines, I pulled out my AMD Turion MT-40 powered Acer laptop to serve as our test bed.

We also completed a more practical test.  That being our copying a 720MB file of pictures and timing it.  Doing so with our Rally2 Turbo took 2:01 minutes.  For comparison, we did the same with a generic 4GB drive which completed the task in 2:56 minutes.  That's quite a difference.

Conclusion

OCZ's Rally2 Turbo has a lot going for it.  The least of which isn't how fast it operates.  Just our little 720MB test file showed 55 second difference in transfer times for 720MB was very impressive.  Imagine that for a 4GB or an 8GB file.  The speed difference would be 5 and 10 times that respectively.  If you scoff at 55 seconds; I put this to you.  How long is 55 seconds with your boss behind you tapping his foot waiting?  Now how about that times 5 for a 4GB file?  The sleek black aluminum look is all well and good but in the end you want a fast flash drive.  The OCZ Rally2 Turbo is the fastest flash drive BY FAR we have seen here.  Add in a lifetime warranty and you will see that it just doesn't get much better than that.

Pros

  • Fastest flash drive tested here to date

  • Available in 4GB and 8GB sizes

  • Sleek aluminum chassis

  • Good value

  • Neck strap attaches to the unit.

Cons

  • Won't bounce as high as the rubber coated OCZ ATV.
