By Dean Barker (3/13/2003)

Introduction

Thermaltake has never been one to fall asleep at the wheel.  Their Xaser Edition power supply unit shows just that.  In regards to power supplies, manufacturers need to have a niche or something different that sets their unit apart from the crowd.  We have seen triple, quadruple, and neon variations recently.  Thermaltake has combined their highly successful Smart Fan II with Serial ATA connections and a choice of Rheostats.  Combine these items with a solid 480 watts and you really do have something different from the rest of the field.  Before we go too far, we want to thanks Thermaltake for making this review possible.

Specifications

  • ATX 480 Watts Meets Intel ATX + 12V 1.1 & 2.03 Version.

  • Dimensions: 150 x 140 x 86mm

  • Weight: 2.5kg

  • Two 80mm fans – Variable rate by manual adjustments or automatic.

  • Front mounted Rheostat for 5.25” bay / Rear mounted Rheostat for PCI expansion slot.

  • Serial ATA plug

  • Over voltage Protection.

When we initially removed the unit from its packaging, the labeling of the unit immediately grabbed our attention.  The Tt Purepower unit is available in a choice of two colors; silver with black badging and black with silver badging.  Our test unit, as you can see is of the black on silver casing variety.  Obviously, this is to try and match the Tt Xaser III case that comes in silver, black, or blue.

Looking at the rear of the PSU shows the now familiar orange plastic of a Tt Smart Fan II.  The gold finger guards accent the fan quite well I think.
